Chem&110 Experiment B – Iron and Sulfur Lab Tutorial

In this lab tutorial, we look over the Iron and Sulfur lab, as well as some of the techniques that you will be required to know to complete this lab. We also review some safety and operating techniques for when using the Bunsen burner. Thanks for watching!

In preparing the Iron and Sulfur Sample, you will need to make a total of four measurements:

Begin by weighing the empty test tube and beaker. Record this mass.

By subtracting the mass of the empty test tube/beaker from the mass of the iron/test tube/beaker, the difference will result in the mass of the iron alone. Once you get within the desired range, record this new total mass. This is your new “zero” point.

Now you can add sulfur into the test tube. By subtracting the mass of the iron/test tube/beaker from the mass of the sulfur/iron/test tube/beaker, the difference will result in the mass of the sulfur alone. Record this mass.

Once you fix the balloon onto the test tube, record that mass as well.
